Members of the Two-Spirit Society of Denver performed honor songs before and after the screening to bless the film’s work in the world and honor the memory of Fred Martinez. The film was followed by a panel discussion and reception hosted by the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

Fred Martinez was nádleehí—someone who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits—a special gift according to his traditional Navajo culture. But his determination to express his truest identity tragically cost him his life. At age sixteen, he was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was murdered in Cortez, Colorado.

For those not in the USA, or under a rock, the referendum she is referring to is California’s infamous “Prop 8″ allowing the voters to take away the rights of GLBT by a democratic majority. As you’ll see, this was wrong because not only did the Supreme Court of California already hear the case and said it was unconstitutional to prohibit same-sex marriage - they heard the case again - changed their mind and have left those married before Prop 8 to remain marrried (if done in the window when it was legal). As Ms. Bowers, explains, the founding fathers knew that allowing the electorate to make laws was a bad idea, which is why elected representatives to enact legislation. That’s what separates a Democracy, the former, from a Republic, the latter. The USA is a Republic (…and to the Republic for which it stands…yes, our pledge of allegiance to the Fatherland, we mean homeland security, we mean the USA…).

Finally, a message from his mother, Miriam Mercado:
